chip

chip NOUN 1) a small, thin piece removed in the course of cutting or breaking a hard material. 2) a blemish left by the removal of such a piece. 3) chiefly Brit. a long rectangular piece of deep-fried potato. 4) (also potato chip) chiefly N. Amer. a potato crisp. 5) a microchip. 6) a counter used in certain gambling games to represent money. 7) (in football or golf) a short lofted kick or shot.
VERB (chipped, chipping) 1) cut or break (a chip) from a hard material. 2) break at the edge or on the surface. 3) (chip away) gradually and relentlessly make something smaller or weaker. 4) (in football or golf) strike (the ball) to produce a short lofted shot or pass. 5) (chipped) Brit. (of potatoes) cut into chips.
